STEAM Storytime- Engineering!

July 30, 2019

Books:
Dreaming Up by Christy Hale
If You’re a Robot and you Know It by David A. Carter

Music:
Driving in my Car” by Ralph World
The World Goes Round and Round” by Dragon Tales
Twirl, Twirl, Twirl” by Mr. Leebot (we danced with ribbons)

Question of the Week: What do you know about robots?
Each week we ask a different question to get a discussion started about our STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) theme of the week.

Songs, Rhymes, & Fingerplays:

Opening Song: The More That we Learn Science
(Using American Sign Language for the bold words)
The more that we learn science, learn science, learn science,
The more that we learn science the happier we’ll be.
We’ll know things and do things,
And explore many new things.
The more that we learn science the happier we’ll be!

Building a Better World Lyrics by: Peter and Ellen Allard
We signed the bold words using ASL while singing

We’re building a better world
We’re building a better world
We’re building a better world
One person at a time.

And the world goes round and round,
the world goes round and round and round.
And the world goes round and round,
the world goes round and round and round.

We’re building a worldwith friends
We’re building a worldwith friends
We’re building a worldwith friends
One person at a time.

And the world goes round and round,
the world goes round and round and round.
And the world goes round and round,
the world goes round and round and round.

Sing new verses to this song by replacing the word friend with a different word. Make it as silly as you wish! This is a fun way for the little ones in your life to learn new vocabulary.

Exploration Time
During the last 30 minutes of storytime, we have fun with guided play, sensory elements, and experiments! For today’s session, we had the following activities:

Sphero
We explored robotics with Sphero. Sphero is an app-controlled, robotic ball. We had fun driving Sphero and changing the colors of Sphero’s LED light panel.

Cubelets
We had more robotic fun with Cubelets. Cubelets are magnetic, robotic blocks. Each block has a different function. When multiple blocks are connected together, they form an output.
