Question of the Week: What is art?
Each week we ask a different question to get a discussion started about our STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) theme of the week.

Songs, Rhymes, & Fingerplays:

Opening Song: The More That we Learn Science
(Using American Sign Language for the bold words)
The more that we learn science, learn science, learn science,
The more that we learn science the happier we’ll be.
We’ll know things and do things,
And explore many new things.
The more that we learn science the happier we’ll be!

You Are My Sunshine
We signed the bold words using ASL while singing
You are my sunshine my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You’ll never know dear how much I love you
So please don’t take my sunshine away

This is the Way
(Tune: Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush. We used ribbons to act out the motions)
This is the way we stir the paint, stir the paint, stir the paint.
This is the way we stir the paint,
So early in the morning.

//Dip our brush
//Paint the picture
//Blow it dry

Scat the Rat
I introduced my friend, Scat the rat, and explained that every time we snap or clap, he changes colors. I use a folder for this activity that has a rat silhouette cut out of the front of the folder and several colors of paper inside of the folder. To make Scat change colors, I just pull a sheet of paper out of the folder revealing the new color behind it that sheet. We say:

“Hey everyone, I’m Scat the rat.
I can change colors just like that! (snap or clap)”

Exploration Time
During the last 30 minutes of storytime, have fun with guided play, sensory elements, and experiments! For today’s theme, we had the following activities:

Paper Collages
