Question of the Week: What is the highest number you can thing of?
Each week we ask a different question to get a discussion started about our STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) theme of the week.

Songs, Rhymes, & Fingerplays:

Opening Song: The More That we Learn Science
(Using American Sign Language for the bold words)
The more that we learn science, learn science, learn science,
The more that we learn science the happier we’ll be.
We’ll know things and do things,
And explore many new things.

Flutter, Flutter Butterfly
Tune: Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, using ASL for the word “butterfly”
Flutter, flutter butterfly, flying in the summer sky
Watch it fly from high to low
Watch it come and watch it go
Fluttery, flutter butterfly flying in the summer sky

We also counted the butterflies on the screen using ASL.

Exploration Time
During the last 30 minutes of storytime, have fun with guided play, sensory elements, and experiments! For today’s theme, we had the following activities:

Play Dough Shapes

What shapes, letters, and numbers can you make?
How does the play dough feel?
What color is the play dough?

How to Two Comprehension Activity

Comprehension: the understanding and interpretation of what is read. To be able to accurately understand written material, children need to be able to (1) decode what they read; (2) make connections between what they read and what they already know; and (3) think deeply about what they have read.

What was your favorite animal from the story?
There were ten different animals shown in the story. Can you draw the ones you remember?
What games did you see the kids playing? Have you ever played those games?
What was the weather like in the story?
How high did we count to?
Where were the kids playing? Where was it located?
Did you learn any new words?
