Letter of the Week
This week we are learning about the letter Dd.

Early Literacy Fact of the Week

In the Fall we talked about five easy ways to help your toddler develop early literacy skills, talk, sing, read, write, and play. In the weeks to come I will expand on each of those five.

Talk

  • Have two way conversations with your children – children learn language by listening.
  • Respond to what they say and add words to stretch their vocabulary.
  • If English is not your first language, speak to your children in the language you know best.
  • Talk while you prepare meals, do chores, get ready for bed, go to work and school in the morning.
  • Don’t talk baby talk – the more complex sentences a child hears the more complex sentences they’ll be able to speak.

Songs & Rhymes

Open Song: Clap and Sing Hello

We clap and sing hello,
We clap and sing hello,
With our friends at story time,
We clap and sing hello!

Wave and sing hello
Stomp and sing hello.

Action Rhyme: Touch
Touch your nose, touch your chin,
That’s the way this game begins.
Touch your eyes, touch your knees,
Now pretend you’re going to sneeze.
Touch your hair, touch one ear,
Touch your two red lips right here.
Touch your elbows where they bend,
That’s the way this touch game ends.

Action Rhyme: Wiggle Your Fingers and Toes
Show me how you clap your hands
Clap, clap, clap
Show me how you tap your feet
Tap, tap, tap
Clap, clap, clap
Tap, tap, tap
Wiggle your fingers and toes!
Show me how you nod your head
Nod, nod, nod
Show me how you flap your arms
Flap, flap, flap
Nod, nod, nod
Flap, flap, flap
Wiggle your fingers and toes!

Action Rhyme: Roly Poly
Roly Poly, Roly Poly, Up Up Up
(roll fists and reach up)
Roly Poly, Roly Poly, Down Down Down
(roll fists and hit the floor)
Roly Poly, Roly Poly, Clap, Clap Clap
(roll fists and clap)
Roly Poly, Roly Poly, Lap, Lap, Lap
(roll fists and pat your lap)

Closing Song: We Wave Goodbye Like This
We wave goodbye like this
We wave goodbye like this
We clap our hands for all our friends
We wave goodbye like this
